5 awesome motivation hacks
Every day I struggle with motivation. I am the kind of person who gets something in my head and needs to completely finish it before I can resume any normal activity. This is probably why I experience my creativity in bursts every couple weeks. First of all, I feel like I never have the time to dedicate to crafts, so when I do, I have to get it all in at once before I run out of time and/or creativity. Secondly, I prefer to completely finish a project when I start it, because I am the worst at picking something up that is half finished and trying to get in the same mindset as when I started. This is why I have a craft cabinet with half finished scarves, table runners… you name it; it’s in there.
This is where my motivation hacks come in. These are just simple ways to keep myself motivated on my project à la jour. (p.s. these work for everyday things too, like working out, eating healthy, and getting work done!)
1. Write it down
Make a list of the things you want to accomplish and what you need to get started. By doing this, you won’t get halfway through and realize you don’t have all the supplies you need to finish. I am a huge fan of lists and can’t tell you how much I rely on them to organize my life. There’s also a great sense of accomplishment that comes with being able to tick something off your list! I also recommend writing a “due date” of when you’d like to get your project done by, and splitting up bigger projects into smaller tasks. *Hint: There is a free printable below!
2. Find a way to get daily inspiration
I follow tons of craft people on Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest. I find that this is a great way to get my daily dose of inspiration and craft ideas. It’s also a great kick in the butt to get my own projects done. I usually check my channels before breakfast, during lunch and before bed. Inspiration is one of the best motivators out there. Seek it!
3. Do things in advance
When you have time and are feeling in the mood, do stuff ahead of schedule. This can be in the form of preparing supplies for a craft you’re planning, meal prep for the week, or even getting your workout clothes ready by the door the night before. By doing this, it eliminates the desire to make excuses. No longer can you say, “I didn’t have time to get it ready, so I am just not doing it.”
4. Keep it tidy
I am more likely to sit down and craft in a workplace that is tidy and organized than in one that needs to be cleaned up before I can even start anything. I am guilty of having a messy craft room when I am in the middle of a project, but once I am done, I
alwaysusually clean up after myself. Trust me, your future self with thank you.
5. Schedule time and just start
No more excuses! Schedule time and JUST START. One of the things that always holds me back is convincing myself that I have enough time. Thinking I don’t have time is just a big old lie, because if I really look at the time I spend daily with my butt on the couch, I would realize how much time I really have. Scheduling really makes you aware of the time you do have, and helps you manage it. I can do way more in one planned hour than I can do with 3 unplanned ones.
